Kenya Registered Midwifery (KRM).

This is a Higher Diploma programme that was started in 1972. The School admits Kenya Registered Nurses from all sectors including public, private and mission for the training leading to Higher Diploma in Kenya Registered Midwifery. Admissions are not limited to Kenyans but are also open to nurses from other countries provided they are registered with the Nursing Council of Kenya and possess a valid alien’s pass. Our students come from Uganda, Tanzania, Sudan, Ethiopia, Democratic Republic of Congo, Rwanda, Burundi, Malawi, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Nigeria U.K., Germany, Ireland, Italy, U.S.A and India. The training lasts twelve months (1 year) following which the midwives are registered by the Nursing Council of Kenya to practice. The School of Midwifery at The Mater has maintained high standards of performance with many students graduating with distinctions and credits. We remain “The centre of excellence”.

The core tenet of the Midwifery School is to embrace the philosophy of Sisters of Mercy, which emphasis in part, the belief in the sacredness of human life from conception to natural death. To date the School has qualified a total number of One Thousand five hundred and nine (1,509)midwives who practice in various parts of the country as well as outside.

Kenya Registered Nursing (KRN).

From September 2004, the school also admitted its first students for training in General Nursing. There are two courses offered:

Basic – training Kenya Registered Nurses for 3 years Upgrading – Enrolled Nurses train to become Registered Nurses over a period of 18 months.

Students undergo their learning experience both through classroom instruction; clinical teaching and practice as well as self-based learning. The syllabus is provided by the Nursing Council of Kenya and students sit their final Council examination which they must pass before they can be registered to practice. To-date we have trained three hundred and twenty six (326) KRNs both basic and post-basic.

Kenya Registered Critical Nurses (KRCCN)

This a higher Diploma programme that commenced in 2013. This is a highly specialized training geared towards care of critically ill patients, who often require life need Support. Students are exposed to clinical practice in our well-equipped ICU and KNH. This being our baby programme has trained seventy one (71) critical care pioneers nurses but the demand is growing high.

Kenya Registered Community Health Nurse (KRCHN)

In 2006, another milestone in the development of the school was the approval by the Nursing Council of Kenya to commence the Distance Learning/E-learning centre for upgrading of Enrolled Community Health Nurses to Registered Community Health Nurses. This programme enables nurses in full time employment to learn as they work. This programme is quite challenging and the performance has been rather disappointing. However we have trained One Hundred and seventy four (174) KRCHNs through this programme.

Short Courses e.g. BLS, ACLS, ATCS etc and tailor made courses.

The institution has well qualified faculty members with specialties suited to the programmes offered; and is sufficient resourced with the state of the art teaching facilities and equipments. Furthermore, plans are ongoing to broaden the scope of programmes offered to provide opportunity to specialize in the nursing field by increasing the numbers of specializations in the post-basic nursing profession and create a powerful workforce e.g. Renal, Theatre, Anaesthetic etc. This will also address the purpose of the school that is pecked on keeping in line with the mission of Sisters of Mercy which is to educate the marginalized of the society.
