Pharmacy Schools in Kenya

Pharmacy is the science and technique of preparing and dispensing drugs. It is a health profession that links health sciences with chemical sciences and aims to ensure the safe and effective use of pharmaceutical drugs.

The scope of pharmacy practice includes more traditional roles such as compounding and dispensing medications, and it also includes more modern services related to health care, including clinical services, reviewing medications for safety and efficacy, and providing drug information. Pharmacists, therefore, are the experts on drug therapy and are the primary health professionals who optimize use of medication for the benefit of the patients.

An establishment in which pharmacy (in the first sense) is practiced is called a pharmacy , a chemist (duka la dawa) or drugstore

Disciplines
The field of pharmacy can generally be divided into three primary disciplines:

  • Pharmaceutics
  • Medicinal Chemistry and Pharmacognosy
  • Pharmacy Practice

Professionals

  • Pharmacists

Pharmacists are healthcare professionals with specialised education and training who perform various roles to ensure optimal health outcomes for their patients through the quality use of medicines. Pharmacists may also be small-business proprietors, owning the pharmacy in which they practice. Since pharmacists know about the mode of action of a particular drug, and its metabolism and physiological effects on the human body in great detail, they play an important role in optimisation of a drug treatment for an individual.

  • Pharmaceutical Technologists

These are diploma in Pharmacy holders. The diploma in pharmacy usually takes three years before they are enrolled by Pharmacy and poisons Board.

Pharmacy and Poisons Board

Registered institutions offer pharmacy course Kenya
The Pharmacy and Poisons Board (PPB or the Board in short) is the Drug Regulatory Authority established under the Pharmacy and Poisons Act, Chapter 244 of the Laws of Kenya.
The Board regulates the Practice of Pharmacy and the Manufacture and Trade in drugs and poisons.
The Pharmacy and Poisons Act, Cap 244 is an Act of Parliament to make better provision for the Control of the Profession of Pharmacy and trade in drugs and poisons.
The Pharmacy and Poisons Board is established as a body corporate, under the Pharmacy and Poisons Act, Cap 244 Laws of Kenya. The PPB is regulatory body within the Ministry of Medical Services. It is a body corporate under Section 3(6)

In the last two decades Kenya has put in place strategies to strengthen the pharmacy workforce through government policies aimed at increased training; improvement of distribution; creating an enabling working environment; recognition and financial and non-financial incentives; and strengthening regulation. Despite these efforts, the ratio of pharmacists to the population remains far below the recommended by the World Health Organization

These are accredited institutions/schools to offer pharmacy in Kenya both at degree level and diploma level Registered Institutions
